Leprosy Cases Are Ticking Up in Central Florida

An ancient, slow-moving health anomaly is quietly creeping along Central Florida’s busiest transit corridor.

Public health data reveals an unexpected concentration of Hansen’s disease (leprosy) cases clustering around the Interstate 4 corridor. According to recent data from the Florida Department of Health, the state recorded 17 confirmed cases statewide, with a heavy concentration tracking through Central Florida counties like Volusia, Brevard, Lake, Orange, and Seminole.

The primary culprit behind this localized spike? The ubiquitous nine-banded armadillo.

Scientists from the University of Florida note that the nine-banded armadillo acts as a natural reservoir for Mycobacterium leprae, the bacterium responsible for the disease. They are the only animals besides humans capable of hosting the pathogen.

Genetic sequencing confirms that the exact bacterial strains found in Florida armadillos match those found in local human patients. However, contracting the disease does not necessarily require direct contact with the animal:

  • Soil Contamination: Armadillos love digging for earthworms and grubs, frequently ripping up suburban yards. They can shed the bacteria directly into the dirt.
  • The Amoeba Vector: Microscopic, single-celled amoebas living in the soil can absorb and preserve the bacteria. Landscapers and gardeners can contract the infection simply by inhaling or handling contaminated soil without protection.

Despite the alarming headlines, state health officials, including State Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo, emphasize that the risk to the general public remains exceedingly low.

  • Natural Immunity: Approximately 95% of the human population is genetically immune to leprosy and cannot catch it under any circumstances.
  • Not Casual: The disease is remarkably difficult to transmit. It cannot be caught via casual contact like shaking hands or sitting next to someone; it requires prolonged, long-term exposure.
  • Completely Curable: Modern medicine has completely neutralized the threat of the historical "leper colonies". Hansen's disease is easily cured with a standard regimen of multidrug antibiotics, though early diagnosis is critical to preventing permanent nerve damage.
