Gloria Steinem, the pioneering activist and journalist who became the definitive face and voice of the modern women's liberation movement, has passed away at the age of 92.
The Gloria Steinem Foundation announced the news on Thursday, confirming that she died peacefully on Wednesday at her home in New York City. According to the statement shared to her official social media channels, she was "surrounded by some of the many who loved her" during her final moments. An official cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
"Gloria’s near-century on earth were years well-lived, and she continued working for equality until the very end," the foundation’s statement read.
As a child, she spent her winters traveling through Florida with her family. Decades later, in 1972, Steinem made national history at the Miami Beach Convention Center. There, she served as a key political strategist, leading the fight to secure women’s rights on the national party platform.
Her memoir is due out later this month.
