Ten People Charged For Hosting Engagement Party Amid Coronavirus Lockdown

New Jersey officials charged ten people for ignoring stay at home orders and hosting an engagement party. Officers in Lakewood received a report of a social gathering where they found a group of people, including children, hanging out on the front lawn and inside a home.

Officials charged the homeowners, Yaakov Kaufman, 47, and Eti Kaufman, 45, with six counts of child endangerment for each of the children at the party, and with violating any rule or regulation adopted by the governor during a state of emergency.

Eight other people at the party, including a 99-year-old man, were also charged with violating any rule or regulation adopted by the governor during a state of emergency.

Authorities in Lakewood have been busy breaking up large gatherings since they are in defiance of New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy's statewide stay at home order. On Sunday (March 29), a different couple was charged with child endangerment for hosting a party with dozens of people. Police have also been called to break up multiple weddings, though in those cases, they did not issue citations.

Murphy said that authorities are going to continue to crack down on people who violate his order against large gatherings during the global coronavirus pandemic.

"We're going to be out every night, every day. We're not going to be nice about it," he told reporters during his daily press briefing.
